As a propagator I have taken Sweet William cuttings in mid summer on the new
vegetative growth.  I take a cutting about three inches long and carefully
strip away the leaves, leaving about 1/2 in of the stem exposed. I also found
that smaller cuttings root better than the larger rosettes. I root them without
rooting compound under a mist system. They usually rooted in about ten days.
Your success might be limited without some type of mist system to prevent the
cuttings from drying up.
