Hi Joanie,
I'm so sorry to hear about your hostas. I have more than 100 varieties
in my garden and know I would be broken hearted to be hit so hard. I
have already destroyed a few hostas for nematodes. So far, no viruses!
Thanks for the link. I'm getting a kick out of the Change in Color -
Sport virus. I've never heard sporting referred to as a virus. It's just
something that hostas do (sport) and is one reason there are so many
different varieties.
Another problem I've just heard about is edema. One person described it
as looking like oil had been splattered on the hostas. One of the
pictures kind of looked like a virus. Edema is from too much water. This
person lives in Connecticut where there was an overabundance of rain
last month. The plants are now fine and no longer display the symptoms.
As for groundcover I have had sweet woodruff and lamium 'Chequers' (love
the purple flowers!). They both grew very well in my shade.
