This is, of course, Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls', one of our native wisterias. The cold winters seem to kill the flower buds of W. chinensis and so I finally had to cut mine down after only 1 decent flowering out of the 15 years I had it. (and the almost constant pruning was just about killing me!) Does W. frutescens require as much pruning?
