Nan,
The best book that I know of on the subject that addresses mild climates
on the US West Coast, is the Sunset Magazine book, HOW TO PLAN,
ESTABLISH, AND MAINTAIN ROCK GARDENS, by George Schenk. This is long out
of print, but easy to find in libraries and used-book shops. Also, go
through past issues of PACIFIC HORTICULTURE. A number of rock gardens
have been described there, including the fantastic garden of Harland Hand
in SF.
I'd also recommend Margery Schmidt's GROWING CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANTS,
since she lists a number of natives best used in rock gardens. Note also
that the NEW JEPSON MANUAL, a comprehensive flora of California,
incorporates Sunset Zone growing information for natives -- this is
useful to use alongside Schmidt's book.
This could be a fun project,
particularly since there are many new
introductions from South Africa, Australia, and some wonderful California
natives that can be used in rock gardens.
