So far as I'm concerned, the best book - by far - for this purpose is
"Right Plant, Right Place." by Nicola Ferguson.
It has reasonable pictures of thousands of garden plants, but - best of
all - gives the critical cultivation information you need to keep from
buying the plants that will thrive in given sets of conditions (ie. dry
shade.) I have carried my copy around to so many nurseries that it's
fallen apart (it's a paperback), and I know I'm not the only person to
have had this experience.
