in my climate (zone 8) this is a late summer, early autumn flowering plant,
and if I remember correctly mine did flower the first year.. it has a very
interesting flower spike with individual petals that can be moved around
and then stay in place.(therefore the common name) it spread very quickly
in this zone, in fact I may have to dig up and divide this season. the
botanical name is physostegia Virginiana (random house book of perennials
calls it "rampant" native of e. north america from Quebec to Minnesota,
seems to like damp locations.
