Re: Clematis problems

Wayside's Garden catalog divides clematis into 3 groups for purposes of
pruning: group 1 which blooms in the spring may be cut back after
blooming, group 2 blooms in early summer and may be cut back just 6-8
inches to a pair of strong buds in March, and group 3 which blooms
during summer and fall should be pruned every year in March to 12 inches
from the ground. They say that groups 1 and 2 seldom need pruning, but 3
should be pruned yearly; they have Henryi and Nelly Moser classed in
group 2.

My clematis (Jackmanii, Henryi, Niobe, Nelly Moser) have also decided to
wilt and die; it started last year and, though they started growth
weakly this year, they have wilted for good now. I had them for at least
6 years growing happily on a trellis on the west side of the house with
a root cover of Vinca - I suspect a poorly drained site and too much
wet weather, last spring and this - here in Zone 4/5 of SE Wisconsin.

Any other suggestions for a flowering vine that will not mind damp feet?
