Sounds like you have Clematis wilt. Once plants are infected not much you
can do. I'd cut it down to the last bud, spray with fungicide, and apply a
root stimulator solution which has vitamin B1.
Are your plants in an area that stay quite moist most of the time? Clematis
are not very tricky plants to grow. When they have the right conditions,
they will live 20 years or more, often up to 50-60 years, depending upon the
species or variety.
Clematis want moist, but not wet soil. They don't like to dry out
completely. The soil around the stem should be cool or shaded by
groundcover, stones or anything to keep the soil from heating up and drying
out. The top of the plant needs good light, preferably morning light, with
light shade in the afternoon, the hottest part of the day.
Clematis do well climbing on a trellis, on other plants or growing among the
groundcover.
The plants you have may have been infected when you bought them. Don't give
up. If they die from the treatment suggested, buy replacements.
