Re: Gardening Library

Hi - it depends on what you need :

Don't buy general basic gardening books - you'll outlearn them soooo
quickly - this list alone is an easy way to learn all they could possibly
give you and more!

For information about specific plants I recommend the Sunset guide - its an
oversized [and somewhat pricey] paperback, but it gives a good discussion
of many many plants, often with drawings, and I've yet to find such a good
all around guide to different plants and their habits that isn't some
enormous hardcover that is $100 or more and not convenient to use - it has
lots of other information too, on techniques etc, and has info on pests and
diseases

For veggie gardens, I highly recommend Square Foot Gardening - there's a
list for it too and its a great way to grow lots of veggies with much less
work and less space

I'm already planning next year's beds [I'm rearranging everything - first
year and all - tons of mistakes!] and have found a great book recently [its
my new favorite] called Growing Plants For Free [Cassell Good Gardening
Guides] A Propogation Guide - its by Geoff Bryant - ISBN 0-304-34673-X [I
include this info a) because I have it at work today and b) because the
others seem pretty common in bookstores but I'd never seen this one before]
Its a terrific guide with general discussions of starting plants from
seed, leaf or root cuttings, or by division, and gives extremely helpful
tables saying which method is best for which plants, and in which season
the things can be done and how often and what the success rates are etc -
chock full of data!!

Rodale also writes a number of great books on organic gardening - if you're
interested [if not, try it!] , And organic gardening magazine is terrific.
I also have a great book on pests and insects, with big glossy pictures and
organic recommendations - but I can't remember the name or author now.
Either way, I suggest browsing the bug and illness books and get one with
lots of pix so you can identify your problems.

These are my personal favorites - I'd love to hear everyone else's! Enjoy
the day - Cherie
