Hi, Diana -- something with dark purple or reddish foliage might
provide a nice contrast, with or without flowers. Do you need
perennials or
might a small shrub or two fit the bill? (Or both, maybe.) Some red
berberis or a purple-leaved elder might give you enough structure that
would enhance other contrasting flowering plants, such as phlox,
monkshood, deep colored daylilies. Or the late blue caryopteris shrubs
with more silvery foliage might work. A big stand of the purple
Pennisetum 'Rubrum' grass would be stunning in late summer. It's not
hardy here but it might be in your zone.
