Peonies are usually considered as heavy feeders, but only when they are
sending out feeder roots. My peonies always have blooms on every stalk that
is sent up. I use a grandular 5-10-5 in the spring and sprinkle it around
each clump, plus I use Miracle Grow every other week or so in the early spring
before they bloom. I take care to totally dead-head after bloom and if I am
feeding liquid fertilizer to other plants and I have plenty left over I will
usually give them an additional shot. I feed all of my perennials the
granular food in the early spring and supplement with the liquid feed as often
as once a week or in some very busy years I only get it on once or twice. By
the time it gets hot to stay here in Michigan I quite feeding and just try to
keep the plants out of stress with mulch and water.
