I placed styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of my whiskey barrels
and then placed a piece of landscaping fabric (the mesh kind with fine
holes) over the peanuts to keep the potting soil from washing down into
them. Worked just fine. If you need some, ask a favorite store that gets
in breakables if they have any left from a shipment. Offer to pick them
up right away so they don't have to throw them away or store.
