Does anyone have any suggestions for something I can fill the bottom of
the container with that would be light, take up lots of space, and not
interfere with drainage?

Try styrofoam packing peanuts. We get quite a few at work, and I save
them. I've used them in several large pots, and they work very well. I
believe that styrofoam is an inert material, so it doesn't release any
harmful chemicals into the soil. I wish I'd discovered them years ago,
before I filled the bottom of whiskey barrels with gravel!
