Janice, don't give up. I have most of my pulmonarias under a
dense canopy of Norway Spruce. I will only water when the
plants in "fernwood" are near death. I've found that just as
you can keep them in more sun if they have consistently moist
soil, if you keep them in denser shade they can take drier
conditions. The biggest problem I have is soil depth in that
site. Ferns are going gangbusters in there but the others are
just having too tough a time getting through the roots, rock &
clay. I did add quite a bit of leaf mold and the like and the
trees contribute nicely, of course. But I think they will have
to be moved this autumn.
