Lavenders

Have only gotten to be "serious" about perennial gardening in the last
two years -- but am still a rank beginner!!

My favorite plant of the moment is my lavender -- have no idea what
variety it is -- sometime in the past I dumped a pkg of seeds in a spot
and two plants survived -- I moved them into a permanent bed last year
and I am entranced with them.  I can see that I am going to expand their
numbers as soon as possible --  they are so "airy"  which seems to make
them a great companion plant for a lot of things.     But:   are there
several varieties and a popular favorite?  I am zone 5,  alkaline soil, 
hot and semi arid  (supplemented w/irrigation)...
