Actually I have had plants get powdery mildew when it is dry. Strange isn't it?
As for separating, if they looke crowded I would separate. I don't know that there is a hard and fast rule.

Yes, the foliage did look milky white. Since this is only my second year of
gardening, I don't know what to look for as far as disease/infestations.
Since I cut them back, and we got a lot of rain, the leaves look like they
are back to normal. I would think that mildew would happen when there was
more moisture rather than less, but I am pretty sure that it was during a
dry period that the leaves got milky white.
When is a good time to separate them and make more plants? I would like to
plant them where there is less sun and see what happens. I have a very
sunny yard, so that will be difficult. I am starting a new bed and it gets
sun all day. Any suggestions?
