I'll be interested to hear Janice's comments, since she's probably been
there many more times than I have (once), but let me chime in here. It's
about 15 years old. Its owner, Nancy deBrule, spoke to my garden club this
spring, and when I sent her a quick e-mail afterwards to thank her, she put
me on the mailing list. (Write to nature@iconn.net.) Natureworks is about
70 minutes from home for me, but about a month ago, I made a day of it, and
stopped there (north of New Haven, south of Hartford, a few miles east of
I-91) and at Twombly's in Monroe, another favorite of mine (whose owner
spoke to my club a couple years ago), and a few places to look for annuals
in between.
Nancy's catalog is wonderful, and her selection of plants is fascinating.
It isn't a large place, but it is jam packed with interesting things at
fairly reasonable prices. What prompted my trip was an e-mail that she had
heirloom tomato plants (Mortgage Lifter and Brandywine were the only ones
I'd heard of, but I bought about 7 different varieties). And she had Dames
Rocket, Hesperis Matronalis, which we'd been discussing here the week before.
Another member of my GC e-mailed me that Nancy has an article in the
July-August issue of Organic Gardening. I haven't yet found it on the
newstand, but am still looking for it. Her talk to our club was "25
perennials no garden should be without, and why." She laid out a very
selective bunch of criteria, including attractive appearance throughout the
season, reasonably pest free, etc., and then showed slides of the 25.
She sends monthly newsletters and assorted other mailings which are
interesting reading.
Janice, tell us what you found!
