Hi Marie, I grow 21 different Pulmonarias in my garden here in zone 8b.
Some are in dry shade and some in moist shade. All bloom very well in
February-April because they get morning sun before the tall trees in my
neighbors yard leaf out. They do tend to look a little ratty by mid summer,
but these are very tough plants once established. So just cut off the bad
looking leaves and when the weather becomes cool and moist again you will
have a fresh new batch of very good looking leaves to get you through the
winter. (Well, since you are zone 5 you may not have winter foliage) Mildew
is the biggest problem in this climate and I have tried moving the
susceptible ones around to see if it made a difference in whether they get
mildew or not. It doesn't make a bit of difference. The same ones get
mildew every year no matter where they are planted and by the same token,
the rest never get mildew no matter where they are planted. They are
wonderful companion plants for Hosta, Astilbe, Dicentra, Vinca, Heuchera and
many woodland ephemerals. Enjoy, Enjoy, Marilyn
