Kate, thanks for the nice explanation of plant zones. Allow me to add to the
confusion. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University has yet another map.
It is only slightly different from the USDA zones. Both divide the US and
Canada into 10 zones. The USDA divides them into neat 10 degree increments,
and the Arnold Arboretum varies its increments.
On some USDA maps each zone # is split into a and b, with b being in the
warmest part of the zone's range, and a being in the coolest.
Whatever zone system you are using, if your plants have wind protection, good
drainage and adequate moisture their hardiness will be increased. If they are
stressed, it will be decreased.
