OT - security

Chris et al,

This discussion has help to clarify my thinking (not easy to do). It
seems that as far as our Internet business is concerned the security
risk is more imagined than actual and that there is an awful lot of
paranoia out there :). It seems to (cynical) me that the sellers of
security programmes have done a good job here. Sure, the credit card
info is at risk from a person determined to steal it, but there are
far more attractive pickings to be had elsewhere offering a better
return on the time invested.

However, and it is a very big HOWEVER, the perception of the buying
public is that they should only give credit card information to secure
sites, and that means that if we wish to sell over the Internet via
credit card then we have to get security, regardless of any actual
risk factors.

From our experience, people who order over the Internet want to
complete the transaction there and then without performing another
operation (eg faxing) which involves a whole lot more time and
expense. Therefore they tend to order by credit card or not at all.

The security situation may be somewhat different for ISPs who have a
whole barrel of extra reasons for needing security for themselves and
their clients.

Conclusion:

1) We need to encrypt order information or otherwise secure our site

2) I should retrain as a security provider! (Yeah, I can just see
that!)
