Doreen-
When we first moved into our home 6 years ago my husband started a compost
pile in the back corner of the yard just by starting to stack/pile leaves,
grass clippings, etc. there. Nothing to contain it....just a big pile of YUK
that I was scared to go around for fear of snakes and other creepy critters.
Anyway--I asked him to clean it up and he kinda did--he make a semi barrier
around it with timbers and cinder blocks, I still didn't like it....but the
pile WAS producing "Black Gold".
So last October, my husband went to Sears Hardware and bought a power tool
for no apparant reason other than he wanted it......well, the reason to tell
you that part was because I had been putting off getting a "real" composter
because of the expense (rather spend money on plants).....so when the kids
fell asleep I went to Sears Hardware--checked out their rubbermaid composting
bins, they had two left at $85/each---asked the sales associate if he would
take something off because it was the end of the season....he took 15% off
with a smile. The point of the entire story now is that I have a nice neat
composter in the back corner that blends with it's surroundings----AND it
doesn't stink. Had I planned better I would have probably bought a different
one but this one works fine. The composting process is a bit slower than
when the "stuff" was in the open air.....but it is worth the wait.
Good Luck
