Donna,

I was reading your post about poppies, got as far as "Springhill" and
stopped. I haven't had the best of luck with them, was tired of calling
them for replacement plants, and generally was tired of deceptive colorized
catalogs that depicted tulips growing with asters in a garden plan. When I
first started gardening, I loved their prices and thought I was getting a
bargain. Now a little poorer and more frustrated that anything, I've since
learned that most of the time you get what you pay for.

I've heard from others that just love that place. Personally I group them
with Michigan Bulb. Don't let this experience turn you off of poppies.
You'd be missing out on one unique specimen.

For poppies, you might want to check out White Flower Farm's fall catalog.
I'm sure that there are others that list members can point you to that
could be cheaper with the same quality. And plant these in the fall from
bare roots. They dislike transplanting anyway, and would probably sulk in
the dog days of summer when they aren't fully established yet.

And you might want to try opium poppies. Mine are blooming right now
(seeds from Thompson & Morgan) and are a full 6 feet tall with peony-like
blooms about 4 or 5 inches across. These reseed easily as I haven't
planted any new ones for two years now. And this is saying a lot for my
garden.
