Re: Begonia grandis

Begonia grandis (Hardy Begonia) is definately a keeper.

It is native to China and Japan, occuring quite northerly & is believed
to be hardy to Zone 6. It sometimes survives in Z5 with a heavy mulch.
Here in Z4, we grow it as an annual, overwintering it in slightly damp
peat, or re-growing it from the bulbils it freely produces.

It will reach 12-18" with an upright habit -allow about a foot spread.
For moist, humusy soil in semi-shade or gorgeous in a large pot. As you
mentioned it has red-veined yellow-green foliage, with the leaves red
underneath. Stems are also red. FRAGRANT pink to rose-pink flowers. Very
floriferous. Flowers from summer to heavy frost here.

Cheers.
