The instructions say, "Once all flowering is finished in the cluster of
buds, deadhead down to new lateral flowers. Deadheading requires close
inspection to be sure that all the flowers in the bud cluster have finished.
Deadheading is particularly useful to prolong the bloom of your or
vigorously growing plants, which may flower the entire summer."
However, it goes on the say that if the plant's foliage browns or gets
rust, go ahead and cut it back by two thirds or to the ground. New foliage
should emerge within 3 weeks. Sometimes the plant will rebloom. Keep the
plants moist for vigorous re-growth. Cutting the plants back by 1/2 in early
May can produce more compact plants.
This information was taken from "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden". This
is my first year for spiderworts too, except for the wild ones which I also
love. Hope it helps you.
