Hi Sophie, The symptoms you describe sound like your Peony may be infected
with Botrytis. The effect of this fungal infection can be bud blast which
causes formed buds to not enlarge or open and discolored leaves with crispy
edges. For us here in the Pacific N.W. it is usually caused by excessive
spring rain that splashes the fungus spores up onto the plant. Good plant
hygiene and increasing air circulation around and through your Peony may
help as well as a fungicide labeled for Peonies.

For several years now, I have had 5 herbaceous peonies in a narrow bed
between the greenhouse wall and the brick patio. They all were growing
beautifully and bloomed profusely till last year when one of them (in the
middle of the row) dried out and lost all the leaves shortly after
blooming.
The foliage looked like what happens in the late fall, leaves got the
reddish tint, curled and then dried out . Thinking that it might be
verticillium wilt, I cut of all stems and cleaned the area below. This year
the new growth was normal, but the plant did not bloom and now the same
thing is happening again. All the leaves have brown edges and general
"after
the first frost" look. Other four peonies were blooming as beautifully as
ever and look very healthy. The area is well watered. I am puzzled as to
what is causing this and wonder if there is something I should be doing.
Hope the learned people on this friendly list can help me. Sophie in
