While we are talking about camellias, I tried an Ackerman hyb camellia
which was suppose to be hardy down to minus 12, but bit the dust at -5
last winter. i had the small three foot shrub ob the north side of the
house and buried in leaves. The entire shrub died. It did survive to
plus 7 the year before when we had an abnormally mild winter.
Interestingly enough I planted a regular japonica on the south side of
the house and it survived protected with leaves and plastic down to
minus 22. I left the leaves around the shrub too long around the bae
until the next spring and the shrub rotted.
I had fuchsias "Gartenmeister Bonstadt" and "Billy Green" survive in an
exposed bed last winter and now the shoots are about 4 inches high. Of
course we had about 6 inches of snow and ice to protect the roots.
Crape-myrtle "Hopi" is another over rated shriub when it comes to
hardiness. Mine died out last winter while other crapes in the
neighborhood are sprouting from old wood.
