Janis, I have a very tall Eryngium in a bed with two clumps of
Echinops. They are great together! Can't remember the specific
name of the Eryngium, but it's at least 5 feet, needs some support
(and nothing else -- no water or fertilizer!). I think it was
supposed to be a biennial or short-lived, but this is the fourth
summer and it's still going strong.
I love these thistly plants with liatris, echinacea, daylilies,
grasses, asters, sedum, rudbeckia, and threadleaf coreopsis -- this
particular bed (one of the few that gets sun here) is looking good
right about now and will go strong for the rest of the summer, with
a little judicious trimming & deadheading.
I have some shorter Eryngium with roses & lavender -- wonderful
combination!
