Maybe it's because I'm not a commercial nurseryperson or landscaper, but I've never quite understood these
"awards." Maybe the decisions are political in nature, like so much of the "organized" gardening world.
At first glance it seems, to an outsider, like the decision is based on overstock or mass production more
than anything else. Rather than using the opportunity to select and promote something uncommon but
deserving more attention, they always select some plain old common thing that most hobbyists -- and
neighborhood shopping malls -- already have plenty of. Isn't this the same group that selected Rudbeckia
'Goldsturm' last year? Since their selection criteria seems to be nothing more than "grows wherever you
throw it and has pretty flowers" then I'm surprised they haven't selected BINDWEED which, despite
everything else, fits that criteria.
But that's just my opionion -- well, actually the opinion of everyone I know.
