Re: bulbs, corms tubers and other Geophytes was: Daylilies - another side of them

Val, you're right that having the word 'lily' in a plant name doesn't
necessarily mean it's even in the lily family (Liliaceae). But, also
different genera of plants - like, for instance Nicotiana, Petunia,
Brugmansia, Capsicum (green and hot peppers), tomatoes and potatoes
are all part of the Solanaceae family - which is one step up from
genus which is a step up from species which is a step up from
cultivar in the order of plants.

Family (Solanaceae)
....Genus (Capsicum)
........Species (annuum)
...........Cultivar (form or variety) ['Purple Tiger']

Sometimes I get rather astounded when I find which plants are
actually part of the same family because they seem so dissimilar at
first glance, but the reason they are there (at least until the
taxonomists move them) is because of the relationship of things like
reproductive organs, chromosomes, etc....stuff you would not see at
first glance.

Seems to me that I've read recently that there's been a bunch of
shifting in the lily family. Following copied and pasted from two
sources seems to reinforce that. Kew is listing, I think (won't
swear to this as am not a taxonomist) what the splitters have come up
with and GRIN is listing - as synonyms, I note - the larger list that
has been considered in that family in the past...also note GRIN's
list has not been updated since 1996 and rather think the splitting
activity is very recent. Where Allium (the onions) are now, Dean,
Lord only knows - would take a bit more digging around in lists of
genera to find out.
