The caryopteris is a shrub so should have left some woody topgrowth from last
year. Use your fingernail or a small knife and scrape the bark near the base
at ground level or just beneath ( narrow scrape on a healthy looking stem).
If the cambium layer under the bark is green your plants are alive. In my
colder zone we often have them freeze back to ground or winter mulch level.
This year they are alive about fifteen inches above ground.
