Re: deep digging

Nancy,

Clay Higgins, who grows show daffs and has the 'Daffodils for Garden
and Show' topic on Suite101, swears by double digging for daffs. He
builds special raised beds for them and removes, redigs and replants
every 3 years. Seems to me, however, that he amends the soil. He
says the roots will grow that deep and it really makes a difference.

He did an article, 'Preparing a "Double Dug" Raised Bed '
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/daffodils_garden_and_show/20964

about how he does this.

On another thread - about moving gardens - Clay also did this last
fall. I'd seen his old garden - huge mature Azaleas; lovely - and he
tried to move as much of it as he could because he knew it was going
to be bulldozed..turned out to be quite a project - he also has
articles about that experience and putting in beds for his daffs at
the new place in not marvelous native soil.

Anyway, you might find something of interest in his articles. He's a
very nice person and would answer any questions you have about
growing daffs, I know.
