Re: plants deer LOVE

Good site, Leslie...by and large, agree with their list of 'usually
and often' eaten. On their list of 'seldom or never', however, the
following appeal to my local herd on a regular basis.

Ipomoea (love I. b. 'Blackie' I found out last summer)
Sweet Basil - would you believe...guess they thought it dessert after
the tomatoes
Amsonia
Angelica
Aruncus - a favorite with my herd
Astilbe - ditto
Boltonia (and all asters) - pruned annually as hors d'oeuvres before
daylily buds main course
Shasta Daisy (and perennial mums) - ditto
Eupatorium species Joe-Pie Weed - eat them down to nubbins at first
opportunity.
Cornus sericea - munch 'Flaviramea' all the time - also like 'Kousa'
leaves
Kalmia latifolia - defoliated mine this winter - 1st time, but there
always is one....

Problem(s) with deer is that different herds in different places will
eat different plants at different times of year; they have leather
mouths; they will do a good bit of damage sampling the plant to make
sure they don't like it; if they are hungry, they will eat ANYTHING.
Well, that is an exaggeration...I do not think they would eat
Euphorbia or Digitalis under any circus...but those are the only
exceptions I can think of.
