Agree with Marilyn...Miscanthus would fill that bill. Take two or
three years for them to reach large size, but they will eventually
get rather huge.
If you really want to keep people from stomping thru', consider one
of the taller, purple leafed barberries - lovely and very thorny
plants...
B. thunbergii 'Crimson Velvet' is a good one for this if you decide
to go the shrub route.
