What about Chamomile as an alternative to walk on. I've also seen it growing on
concrete/hypatufa seats as a lovely smelling resting place or cushion. Not sure
of the
climate differences between New Zealand and your area of US but worth a look.
There isa book and a made for TV movie from the book called The Chamomile lawn,
by
Mary Wesley. very English, very romantic.
My garden has areas of a sweet smelling herb called Pennyroyal, it's a form of
ground
cover mint, I think, as it has mint type of flowers at the flowering time of
year , lovely when
someone is mowing the lawn, It just sends up such a glorious fragrance.
