For this type of project, I recommend a book on xeriscaping. Unfortunately,
since I live in a colder area than zone 5, I don't have a specific title to
recommend.
For my area, I like "Creating the Prairie Xeriscape" by Sara Williams
(1997, University of Saskatchewan Press, ISBN 0-88880-357-5).
The techniques covered would work anywhere but the section on plant
material would be a bit limiting for southern Michigan. I'm sure there are
similar book for your area and zone.
