Gene makes good point about seed production and whether a plant goes dormant
early.
Many of the spring blooming plants will go dormant in July unless they have
fruit with growing seeds, the plant has no use to stay around if it does not
have seeds to grow. so no matter how much one waters they "go down"
In other groups of plants this is how extended flower production is produced.
These plants are infertile and since there is no seed set-they keep on
producing more flowers.
Also some double flowered plants also work on the same principle-the flowers
cannot be fertilized so the petals stick around much longer, an example is
the double flowering blood root-once the flower is pollinated the petals fall
off, in my garden the normal form takes about two days to open and be
pollinated and for the petals to fall off.
