Curious if anyone has experience with variegated ginger? (alpinia
sanderae from New Guinea)
On a recent trip to Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory in
Milwaukee, WI- I noticed a stand of this near a pond. (I think that was
the plant- not many plant markers there-) I assume it is tropical and
not hardy here in zone 5 IL. What I would like to know is how quickly it
grows and a source for it.
Donna:
I have a good friend in Tallahassee who grows, collects and researches gingers in detail. He has just started selling some on Ebay and he is known to send very nice plants.....trust me, he is a gardener first.
His name is Dave Skinner, here is an example of one of his auctions... eBay item 2007015472 (Ends Mar-09-02 17:50:05 PST ) - Beginner Ginger - THREE Alpinia nutans plants
He also has a very informative website regarding the growing of gingers.....here you can find out all you need to know and maybe discover an interest in others. He also welcomes emails. Just tell him Kemberly sent you and he will know.
Dave has also been one to test zones, he's a very good source of reference. His website is:

He is passionate about his plants and gardening and a wealth of information.
