Claire,
G. cinerium and hybrids are small leafed, short and compact. Best looking
is either 'Lawrence Flatman' (zone 5) or 'Ballerina' (zone 7-8) both are
10", pink with very prominent purple veins (in fact I can't tell them
apart). G. cinerium subcaulescens - hot magenta with a black eye - is a
real cutie at 4-6". All repeat bloom.
I grow G. renardii mostly for its beautiful scalloped, quilted soft gray
green foliage. Large white flowers with thin violet veins. 10", compact
and "pettable", people ask about it and ask for it. (zone 5).
I have never divided mine and they look great. All are great for rockeries
and seem to perform equally well in sun or part shade.

I would appreciate any testimonials of hardy geraniums that are compact and
true to descriptions. Also, do others find these need to be divided and
reset to look good almost annually.
