Marilyn-
Let me start by saying I know *nothing* about roses (although I'd better learn soon
since I planted 5 last year!).
But, since your son is not far from me, maybe he could check out the Conard Pyle
company whose roses are sold retail as "Star Roses" ( http://www.starroses.com ). I
think they sell only wholesale at the nursery and online they'll direct you to a
local nursery carrying their roses . They're located in West Grove, PA which is
about 5-10 min. south of Longwood on Rt. 1.
Each spring - and I think it's on Memorial day weekend or the weekend before - Conard
Pyle donates roses for a fundraiser that's held at the nursery for a local charity .
I haven't been able to go since I first heard about it 3 years ago but my neighbor
went last year and because it was pouring down rain early in the morning, attendance
was way down and they were selling some roses for $1 a piece when he got there at 10
AM (which is how I came to acquire at least some of my roses last year!). It's
supposed to be a lot of fun to go - people get there really early and bring a blanket
or an extra person who will just stand and watch the goodies as they are acquired. I
think shrubs and perennials are sold as well.
Maybe I'll even be able to go this year!
