Boston Flower Show - post mortem

Hello All,

I spent a very enjoyable day at the Flower Show yesterday - as always very
lovely and good shopping. I loved the shooting waterfall as you enter,
except I had just driven for an hour with several cups of coffee in me!
Bartlett Tree Co. had a great display of a hemlock grove and pond complete
with brook trout! Every year I leave with a new determination to add water
to the garden SOMEWHERE.

I was disappointed to find the MHS bookstore replaced by Borders. I really
wanted to look at some books on sedums and cranesbill before buying
anything. One reason I go every year to the show is to browse the MHS store
- nothing replaces leafing through a book before you buy it.
On a lighter note my offspring did like the Thomas the Tank Engine freebies.

One plant stood out - Ballota nigra - Prancing Jester - a variagated black
horehound. Several google searchs later, I found some info - must be fairly
new to commerce. I'd love to add it, but adding a member of the mint
family!?! to the garden as a ground cover sounds dangerous.

The shopping was weird - I did buy a lilac and some plants from one of the
Dutch companies, found a sun hat (that I still love and my DH hates) and a
new gardening T-shirt. BUT lots of strange things - more foodstuffs and
jewelery than last time, massaging pillows, decorated switch plates and the
like; stuff I'd expect to find a craft show. I know MHS is in troube, but
what audience are they looking to pull in?

Cheryl
