While we have no experience with Peegee we think pruning back Oakleaf to
the ground is extreme. We have never cut back our Oakleaf Hydrangeas in
our garden here in southwestern Michigan, zone 5. Actually except for an
occasional snip here and there to maintain size/shape we usually do not
prune them at all of course ours even after a number of years are only
five feet tall. They are all underplanted with perrenials and companion
shrubs. Will be interesting to see if others actually have to prune
theirs.
