I've used cocoa hulls in very large perennial borders for 12 years. The
mold is just a natural process that in no way harms the plants.
In those beds where I have used wood mulches in place of cocoa there is
a marked difference in size and health of the perennials. My experience
is that if you can afford the extra cost, cocoa is well worth it.
