Unless it is well aged sawdust is not recommended as a mulch because of
the nitrogen required to break it down. We know it is how attractive a
ready source can be particularly if the cost is right so by all means add
nitrogen if you decide to use it. Some shrubs like blueberries actually
grow better in sawdust. Actually aspen sawdust is not really all that bad
as sawdust goes. We have to also admit that we have used sawdust a time
or two ourselves.
