Barb,  I am just now pruning my Dianthuses here in zone 8b.  If you shear
them  now (I use my hedge shears and just whack them back neatly) you will
increase your flower production for this year.  You will get a bloom on each
tip.  They can be sheared again after the first flush of flowers and many
will give you some re-bloom later in the summer.
