Hello Peggy & others,
	The smell of the blooms on Fairy Candles (Cimicifugas) depends upon the
species or hybrid. You may want to take a look at the article on my web
site covering Cimicifuga. 
	One of my favorites is the C. simplex  "White Pearl". To me a lot like
honey. I also have the C. racemosa Atropurpea, but can not remember the
smell of the blossoms just now. I do not remember it being offensive. The
nursery beds were full last year, so if it had of been throwing off an
offensive smell I would think I would remember it.
