There are several different species of Cimicifuga.  Some, like the
mid-summer blooming C. racemosa have, indeed, 'carrion' scented flowers (to
attract flies to pollinate), but the C. ramosa atropurpurea and C. simplex
which are late (Aug., Sept., Oct.)  blooming, have a sweet grapey type
fragrance, which attracts bees and wasps.
