Jeanne, 

There can be any number of reasons why your perennials did not self seed or
the seeds did not germinate.  Could be due to lack of enough moisture for
germination.  Or it could be cultural practices like deadheading, mulching,
cultivating.  Maybe you burried the seeds in all the yummy ammendments you
added!  

Whatever it was, I have a suggestion.  Instead of buying new plants to fill in
the spaces, why not divide the perennials you have?  Summer and fall blooming
perennials can be divided in the spring.  It is best to divide spring bloomers
in the fall.
Either way, you will have flowers sooner from the divisions than you would
have had from seeds.   

And, don't you think it was nice of me to try to help you after you insulted
our beloved pet snake, Frank?
