I have grown tomatoes in the same plot for 6 years now, and my crops are as
big or bigger each year. I have grown several varieties-- hybrids and
heirlooms, with equal success.
Each year before planting, I do stir some compost into the plot. And into
each planting hole goes a handful of crushed eggshells, saved over the
preceding winter. I was given advice that crushed eggshells provide
calcium, which is very important to tomatoes. There's no way for me to tell
whether that, specifically, has had any effect, but I can tell you that my
tomato plants have been robust, disease-free, and flavorful.
FWIW, I should also add that the plants receive full sun virtually from
sunrise to sunset, that we have "good dirt", and that we garden organically.
