I have moved peonies at almost any time of the year. I have some that I
have moved off and on for 20 years! If you can dig the holes first, (make
them big), then dig the plants and try to get as much of the root ball as
you can, deposit into the hole you have gotten dug and they should continue
to grow and even bloom this year. Just put them at the same level they were
planted. I have had much success moving mine and every time I move to a
different location, regardless of the time of year, I take some with me.
They are well worth the trouble and even if they don't bloom this year they
should be well established and bloom the next.
