The only one I can comment on is the Knautia macedonia. I have a couple of 
them (so far-I've heard they are inclined to reseed). The foliage is nothing 
to write home about-rather ragged and weedy looking  but at least it is low 
to the ground. The flowers are carried on thin wiry stems well clear of the 
foliage (about 18" tall as I recall) and are-in the species-a dark burgundy 
colour and shaped like a scabious. They are much smaller than they appear in 
books. Still, they're quite a useful colour and the trick is to plant them 
behind something that will hide the foliage but let the flowers show. Malva 
moschatos in the white form makes a good choice if planted densely enough.
